South Park makes its grand season 22 return tonight at 10 p.m. ET on Comedy Central with an episode written and directed by the one and only Trey Parker! Season 22 of South Park will have 10 total episodes and tonight’s chapter marks the first episode of 2018! Season 21’s last episode “Splatty Tomato” featuring President Garrison aired back on Dec. 6, 2017.

If there’s one thing South Park does not shy away from its current events, no matter the subject matter, and tonight they tackle the extremely sensitive subject of a shooting at South Park Elementary. It’s practically a given South Park will be the talk of every news station across the country (again) after tonight’s episode airs.

In the preview for tonight’s South Park, Randy hears about a shooting that took place over in Stan’s school but then as he realizes Stan is not hurt (and Stan didn’t do it), he’s more concerned about his failing grade on a Math quiz.

The way both Stan and Randy nonchalantly switch topics like it’s something that happens regularly spells out what’s likely the leading theme for tonight’s plot line. In contrast, Sharon is quite emotional about the matter while Stan, Randy, and Stan’s sister Shelly keep eating dinner normally. Normalization of the matter so to speak. Will Sharon be able to come to grips with the topic the way Randy has? On the same note, should she? Or will it be Randy, Stan, and Shelly who start seeing her perspective?

Might South Park introduce a new character to the series tonight as the individual responsible or utilize one of the originals? Tough topic to take on, that’s for sure.
