The Minnesota Vikings secondary pretty much watched Jared Goff put on a show last night as the Vikings fell to the Los Angeles Rams, 38-31. As expected, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer was not happy at all with the unit.

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer has built a reputation as a defensive guru, serving 14 years as a defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons, and the Cincinnati Bengals. But last night, the Vikings defense was torn apart by the Los Angeles Rams offense. After, Zimmer implied that he’s never been more disappointed in a secondary: ever.

The Vikings defense allowed 556 total yards of offense — which is the fourth-most in team history and the most by a Zimmer-led defense since 2000.  Rams quarterback Jared Goff passed for 465 yards and five touchdowns while completing 78.8 percent of his passes (26-33.) Lastly, Goff posted a perfect quarterback rating of 158.3, while Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods and Brandin Cooks — all gained at least 100 receiving yards.

With that being said, it’s very easy to see why Zimmer would be irate with his secondary.

"“Probably anywhere I’ve ever been, I’ve never been this poor in pass coverage,” Zimmer said. “We’re going to have to look at everything we’re doing and get back to doing things correctly.”“They have a good scheme,” Zimmer said. “I’m not going to take anything away from their scheme. But it’s the same scheme we played last year that had seven points, so we made some mistakes. We left a bunch of guys open. And they have a good scheme.”"

Next. Sure sounds like Le’Veon Bell is worried about his workload. dark

To the Rams credit, the addition of Brandin Cooks made an already explosive offense even more potent. The Rams opened up their checkbook this summer and booked Cooks for a five-year, $80 million extension and last night it paid off ten-fold. For Zimmer, any chance for the Vikings to reach the heights they did last year will obviously involve some changes in the secondary. But last night, the Rams mastery was on full display. Zimmer should chalk this one to the game and just try to improve.
