Only four teams make the College Football Playoff, but is it enough? Former coach Steve Spurrier knows how to fix that problem.

Since the NCAA switched to a playoff format for the football national championship, there has been an issue every year over the teams that make it. This format was supposed to stop smaller schools from getting overlooked like in the BCS days, but since its inception in 2014 we’re just getting more of the same. Usually two SEC schools fill half the bracket, and the other two schools cycle between Oklahoma, Ohio State and whichever Pac-12 school is having a big year.

Former head coach at Florida and South Carolina Steve Spurrier has a pretty good solution to that.

“If I was a commissioner I’d like to see us go to eight, simply because you can have your five conference champions and then have three at-large teams,” Spurrier told FanSided. “If you had eight teams with three at-large teams UCF certainly would’ve been one of those. But I don’t know if that’s going to happen.”

UCF was the only team to finish last season with an undefeated record, but received no invitation to the College Football Playoff. While their strength of schedule was always cited as the reason they didn’t make the cut, the Knights did beat Auburn 34-27 in the Peach Bowl last season. If UCF were competing in the SEC, Spurrier thinks they could give the conference powerhouses a run for their money.

Of those powerhouses is Florida, Spurrier’s alma mater and school he coached for 11 years from 1990-2001. The Gators take on longtime rivals LSU this Saturday, in a game that should come down to the wire. Although Spurrier is always rooting for his Gators, this game has a bit more on the line as the former head coach made a small wager with former LSU head coach Les Miles.

There’s no money involved, but after trading friendly shots on Twitter the bet was made. If Spurrier’s Gators win, Miles has to wear one of Spurrier’s signature visors. If LSU wins, Spurrier has to eat grass straight from Tiger Stadium.

“Les [Miles] wearing a visor for a day or two I think would be a little embarrassing for him,” Spurrier said. “I don’t have to eat a lot of grass, as long as it’s clean I should be okay.”

LSU is coming into the game undefeated, already beating previously No. 8 Miami and a 7th-ranked Auburn team. Florida has already won as many games as they did last season with a 4-1 record entering this contest.
