Updated NFL standings, Week 6: Chiefs, Rams remain unbeaten

It was catch-up time for a number of teams as the NFL season hit its second quarter. But two clubs remain perfect after five weeks of play.

It’s fascinating to watch the NFL and the changes that occur on a weekly basis. There was no better evidence of this than in Week 5 as we saw changes within each division due to the fact that the majority of the teams in each group either won or loss. Here’s a look at the updated standings entering the Washington Redskins’ Monday night visit to the Superdome.

AFC East: One week after being blown out by the New England Patriots at Foxborough, the Miami Dolphins squandered a 17-0 lead at Cincinnati and went down for the second straight Sunday. Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets and Pats all came away with victories. All four teams are within one game of each other.

AFC North: The Cincinnati Bengals rallied to defeat the visiting Dolphins on Sunday, while the Steelers and Browns also came away with wins. The latter edged the Baltimore Ravens in overtime, Cleveland’s first divisional win in three years. Now Marvin Lewis’ club sits alone atop the division with a 4-1 record.

AFC South: After three weeks, the Houston Texans were sitting with a 0-3 record. This week, the Jaguars, Titans and Colts all took it on the chin. Tennessee is technically leading the AFC South with a 3-2 record thanks to that Week 3 win at Jacksonville. But things changed dramatically for this quartet the last few days.

AFC West: Thanks to a pair of wins in the span of seven days, the Kansas City Chiefs remain the lone undefeated team (5-0) in the AFC. The Chargers have won two straight and sit at 3-2 but have already lost a home game to Andy Reid’s team. The Raiders fell to 1-4 with a loss to the Bolts, while the Denver Broncos lost their third consecutive game after a 2-0 start.

NFC East: The 2-1 Washington Redskins take the field Monday night at New Orleans knowing that the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys all lost on Sunday and all by three points or less. The defending Super Bowl champion Birds are 2-3 and have already lost as many games as they did a season ago.

NFC North: The well-rested Chicago Bears have won three straight games and are still alone atop the NFC North. Both the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions came away with victories last season, the latter at the expense of a Green Bay Packers’ team that must be kicking themselves at the moment.

NFC South: The defending NFC South champion New Orleans Saints have won three straight and host the Washington Redskins on Monday night. Right on their heels are the 3-1 Carolina Panthers, rescued by a 63-yard field goal on Sunday. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers return to the field this week after some time off and head to Atlanta to face a 1-4 Falcons’ team that has allowed an unimaginable 121 points in their last three games.

NFC West: Sean McVay’s club is 5-0 and has scored at least 33 points in each of those games. They knocked off the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, dropping Pete Carroll’s club to 2-3. And the Arizona Cardinals became the last team in the NFL to get a win this season with a 28-18 victory at San Francisco against the mistake-prone 49ers.
