2. Appalachian State Mountaineers (Sun Belt Conference) 4-1

The thought was Appalachian State would face their toughest test since the season-opening loss to Penn State when they traveled to Arkansas State for a Tuesday night showdown. In what was believed to be a Sun Belt championship preview, it was anything but as App State won convincingly by the score of 25-9 behind 115 yards and a touchdown from Darrynton Evans and a pair of scores from quarterback Zac Thomas. The defense was particularly stingy, recording three interceptions from Justice Hansen and limiting Arkansas State to 3-18 on third down.

Up next: October 20 vs. Louisiana-Lafayette.

1. Central Florida Knights (AAC) 5-0

The Knights used a balanced offensive approach on their way to a 48-20 win over SMU last Saturday. McKenzie Milton threw for 278 yards and two scores. The team ran for 256 yards and four touchdowns. Adrian Killins Jr. led UCF with 113 yards, and Otis Anderson had 74 yards on only eight carries. The Knights–ranked 10 by the AP voters and 9 by the coaches–are clearly the biggest threat from the Group of 5 to earn a New Year’s Six bowl bid, and potentially even a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Up next: Saturday at Memphis.
