The New York Knicks have added fascinating pieces, but their roster remains undeniably confusing as they enter the 2018-19 NBA season.

Kristaps Porzingis is the future of the New York Knicks, at least for now. Granted, you never really know what James Dolan has in store for this franchise, but the 7-foot-3 Latvian is the superstar cornerstone of this roster. Unfortunately, they will be without him to start the 2018-19 NBA season.

After tearing his ACL in February last season, Porzingis is still not ready to make his way back into the fold. He’s still not been cleared for sprinting yet and, given the state of the Knicks roster, it would seem that maybe the franchise could embrace tanking this season and take it slow with his recovery.

Subsequently, New York’s roster entering this season can best be described as a mess. It’s a hodge-podge of players that have value in this league, but that don’t necessarily add up to comprise a quality overall team.

Expecting this Knicks team to accrue a great number of wins in the 2018-19 season would be a fool’s errand. They are clearly still in the midst of a rebuilding project, a project that centers on Porzingis. Without him in the fold, the campaign then becomes about figuring out which pieces currently on the roster should be kept around as long-term answers for this team.

That leaves some positional groups looking quite crowded heading into the 2018-19 season, meaning that opportunities are abound. With that in mind, let’s look at each position and see what the Knicks have and how things could shake out for each group in the upcoming season.
