Not even Beyonce could pry Anthony Davis from the Pelicans

In case the value of Anthony Davis was ever in question, the New Orleans Pelicans wouldn’t even trade him for Beyonce if that were on the table.

Anthony Davis will be just 25 years old when the 2018-19 NBA season tips off and has already established himself among the elite players in the league. The New Orleans Pelicans big man finished third in MVP voting last season and, with Demarcus Cousins officially gone from his team, he’s a viable candidate to win the award this season.

Given his age and ability, the argument could be made that Davis is the most valuable asset in the entirety of the NBA. Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry would fervently agree — perhaps more so than those who also hold Davis in high regard.

When talking about Davis to the media on Monday (per Andrew Lopez of NOLA.com), Gentry called his superstar the most valuable player in the league, citing the fact that he could be traded for anyone in the league. Just because the Pelicans could, however, doesn’t mean they would. And Gentry wouldn’t even make such a deal for someone outside the NBA, even if that someone is Beyoncé:

Trading a 22-time Grammy winner for a five-time All-Star and three-time All-NBA selection would be a blockbuster of unprecedented proportions. Especially considering that both are still in their prime (as long as she exists and remains performing, Beyoncé must be considered as such).

Of course, it’s difficult to say if Beyoncé would be able to stretch the floor or protect the rim like Davis. Then again, would anyone in the NBA dare to try and throw down on her in the paint? Anyone’s best guess would be probably not.

In all seriousness, Gentry’s point is well taken in this regard, despite the humorous context it was put in. Davis is an asset that is almost unmatched in this league. He’s a true unicorn in this league and, in the interest of the Pelicans future, almost no realistic trade would return the value with what they have in Davis.

Unless, of course, the sole goal is to sell out the Smoothie King Center every night. In that regard, you have to give the edge to Beyoncé.
