2019 NFL Mock Draft: Chargers find successor for Philip Rivers
By Brad Weiss
The San Francisco 49ers put up one heck of a fight on Monday night, as they went into Lambeau Field with their backup quarterback and nearly pulled off the upset. CJ Beathard played incredibly well under center, but had a costly interception late in the game that allowed Aaron Rodgers to bring his team back for the victory.
For the 49ers, this is not how they imagined the 2018 NFL season would go, especially after their solid end to last season, and the additions they brought in this offseason. But here we are, sitting at 1-5 through the first six games, and looking like a team that could be picking very early in round one next year.
With their first round pick, the 49ers should look to get better along the defensive line, and Ed Oliver from Houston may be too good a player to pass up at No. 5 overall. The 49ers got great pressure on Rodgers all game long on Monday night, so adding Oliver could make this unit a real strength moving forward.
Jimmy Garoppolo is out for the year, so it is possible the 49ers could be battling the Arizona Cardinals to stay out of the cellar of the NFC West the rest of the way. Beathard showed promise on Monday night, but there is not much talent around him, and a top-10 pick looks to be in the cards for John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan once again in 2019.
