Hue Jackson seems to blame Todd Haley for Sunday’s loss (video)

Hue Jackson has vowed to get more involved with the Browns offense, and he continued to point a finger at Todd Haley on Monday.

Right from the outset, as documented on “Hard Knocks”, the relationship between Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson and new offensive coordinator Todd Haley seemed to be strained. Jackson had not had an offensive coordinator in his first two seasons as head coach, and he felt the need to assert that he was the boss.

Against a bad Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense on Sunday, the Browns got very little done offensively. They had just seven offensive points through three quarters, and needed 14 fourth quarter points to force overtime. They entered the game 20th in the league in total offense, and 23rd in passing offense, and they’re now 21st and 23rd in those categories heading into the final game of Week 7 Monday night.

Jackson suggested he needs to get more involved with the Browns’ offense after Sunday’s game, including the possibility he will take over play-calling. That surely won’t sit well with Haley, who can be a difficult personality and who Jackson promised total autonomy when he was hired.

After stating his desire to be more involved with the offense, Jackson reiterated his previous soundbite about who he is in the Browns’ hierarchy.

"I feel like I have to and I want to,” “That’s what I know, so I’m not going to continue to watch something that I know how to do keep being that way, and that’s just the truth. I mean, that’s nothing against anybody in our building. I just think that’s what I do and I think I need to be a little bit more involved.”“I’m the head coach of the football team, period. Period,” “There’s nothing else that needs to be said. Nothing. That’s the way it works. I’m the head coach of the football team. That’s it.“It’s not going to be about butting heads. I’m the head coach of the football team. I will do what I feel I need to do to get this team where it needs to be."

Jackson reminded us again that he’s the Browns’ head coach, and maybe it’s a fresh reminder to Haley if he has any objection to a new dynamic.

On Monday Jackson confirmed that he’ll be more involved in the offense, with his money quote yet again.

As if the assembled media or anyone else who may care didn’t know it, Jackson decided to go back to “I’m the head coach of this football team” as a cap to his comments. That’s something someone who is insecure would say once, let alone multiple times, and Jackson is surely feeling some extra heat as the Browns have lost back-to-back games to fall to 2-4-1 on the season.

Jackson could wind up firing Haley some time in the coming weeks. But Haley might make it easy for him and quit, as his hands are set to get tied by “the head coach”.
