Juventus beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday, Oct. 23. Here are all the highlights from the match.

Juventus beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday, thanks to Paulo Dybala’s first-half strike. The prematch chatter focused on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Old Trafford homecoming, but the Portuguese was overshadowed by his strike partner and by Juve’s midfielders.

Juventus dominated the first half, controlling possession and pegging United deep in their own half. With Miralem Pjanic and Rodrigo Betancur controlling tempo in the middle, Juan Cuadrado and Blaise Matuidi providing support out wide and Paulo Dybala constantly dropping deep to receive the ball, United seemed unsure how to stem the tide.

Juve took the lead in the 17th minute, Dybala tapping in from close range after Chris Smalling had done well to cut out Ronaldo’s cross. The goal was well deserved on the balance of play, and the Italian side easily could have doubled their lead later in the half only to see David de Gea deny Ronaldo’s free-kick and Matuidi’s follow-up.

United seemed to get a better hold of Juventus in the second half, but still struggled to create much going forward. Anthony Martial looked like their most dangerous player again, but he was well covered by Juve’s superb right-back Joao Cancelo. Marcus Rashford on the opposite flank was mostly ineffective.

Their best chance came in the 75th minute, when Paul Pogba picked up on a loose ball, beat Pjanic with a wonderful turn and curled the ball onto the post from 25 yards. The chance marked the changing momentum, as the home side saw their first extended spell of possession in the match, and Juve seemed increasingly happy to play on the break.

Given United looked for long stretches of the first half like they might be on the wrong end of a three or four-goal rout, a battling 1-0 loss was hardly the worst result for Jose Mourinho’s side. With Valencia drawing Young Boys in the other game in the group, they also stayed second in the group.
