Baker Mayfield isn’t going to help the Browns win many games if he keeps getting this kind of protection from his O-line.

The Cleveland Browns might still be a little shaken from the firing of their former head coach Hue Jackson, which happened just six days ago.

Whatever it is, there must be something wrong, because Greg Robinson and David Njoku both failed to protect quarterback Baker Mayfield with what would’ve been a very simple block on Kansas City Chiefs safety Jordan Lucas.

Instead, Lucas was able to slip right by both Robinson and Nkoju with relative ease, almost as if they weren’t even there. Moments later, he sacked Mayfield, and Robinson and Njoku proceeded to look at each other as if they had no idea what just happened.

With protection like that, it’s no wonder that quarterbacks don’t last very long in Cleveland. Having a poor offensive line is one thing. But this is something on an entirely different level.

It’s not like they couldn’t see Lucas coming right at them. He was right there in plain sight. But instead of making any moves to get in his way, or even just slow him down, Njoku and Robinson looked like they temporarily forgot what they were doing or even where they were at. This was a routine block for any offensive lineman, and yet these guys fell flat on their faces in very typical Browns fashion.

At this point, however, we expect this kind of dysfunction from the Browns. They went 0-16 last year, and the year before that, they went 1-15. They finally realized Jackson wasn’t helping them progress forward and relieved him of his head coaching duties.

But yet, with plays like this, things appear to be just as bad as ever in Cleveland. Mayfield has all the talent in the world, and he could be the guy to put the Browns back on the map. But with extremely subpar protection like that, he’s not going anywhere but straight into the ground.
