Nick Mullens, QB, San Francisco 49ers

Out of all the waiver wire options at the quarterback position, Cleveland Browns signal-caller Baker Mayfield has to be considered the safest. The rookie quarterback has plenty of talent, is getting some of his weapons to full strength, and received a recent upgrade in coaching staff.

However, fantasy owners interested in rolling the dice with their secondary quarterback option should consider picking up Nick Mullens, who emerged from obscurity to lead the San Francisco 49ers to a 34-3 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Thursday Night Football.

While the 49ers are keeping things quiet, it would be an upset for them to start CJ Beathard over Mullens in Week 10. Although Beathard has been capable in Jimmy Garoppolo’s absence (due to an ACL tear), Mullens looked like a possible star, albeit against an atrocious Raiders defense that is in a state of pure dysfunction.

Mullens will be tested slightly more against the New York Giants, but the Giants are just as directionless as the Raiders and nearly as listless defensively. The undrafted free agent out of Southern Miss used Pierre Garcon to devastating effect in Week 9, and he looks more capable of putting up big numbers on offense than Beathard.
