Kent State was thoroughly dominated by Buffalo in some Tuesday night MAC-tion, and the wind also thoroughly dominated one of their punts.

The flip of the calendar to November brings some weekday MAC football, affectionately known as #MACtion. The Buffalo Bulls went to 9-1 on Tuesday night with a 48-14 route of Kent State, but the highlight of the game was a lowlight for quarterback Dustin Crum.

As winter starts to descend on the northern part of the country, wind and weather will be a factor in football games. The wind in upstate New York Tuesday night was forecasted to possibly reach up to 60 MPH, and the two teams combined for just over 200 passing yards in the game.

Late in the first quarter, trailing 21-0 and facing a 4th-and-8 from around midfield, Kent State head coach Sean Lewis kept the offense on the field but put backup quarterback Dustin Crum in the shotgun. Crum then punted the ball, and well, take a look…

Crum’s punt, into the stiff wind, netted zero yards and may have gone a little backwards.

Wind certainly has affected a lot of kicks over the years. A memorable one comes from then-Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould in 2005, in a game where kicking field goals (and even pre-game long-snapping) was an adventure.

Chicago lived up to its label as the “Windy City” in a strong way that day, as it has on multiple other days, But somehow, amazingly, Gould made over 85 percent of his field goals over 11 seasons as the Bears’ kicker.

Sometimes wind doesn’t play a factor, it’s just simply a terrible kick. We need to look back no further than this past weekend for an example of this:

Crum did see some action under center in the blowout loss for Kent State, with 122 total yards (66 rushing) and two total touchdowns as he led two fourth quarter scoring drives. So there was some redemption for him, but the most memorable play from an otherwise forgettable weekday MAC game will be his wind-stifled punt.
