Could Clemson transfer Kelly Bryant solve Miami’s quarterback quandary?

The Miami Hurricanes have not found consistency under center this year, but is Kelly Bryant the answer to Mark Richt’s prayers looking to next year?

Kelly Bryant’s potential suitors continue to grow. Since announcing his transfer from Clemson after being replaced by Trevor Lawrence, the list of interested schools is growing by the day. North Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi State, Auburn and Florida have all been attached to Bryant to some degree, and earlier this week 247 Sports added Miami to the list of schools who have made contact with him.

Malik Rosier started the first four games this season for the Hurricanes, before giving way to N’Kosi Perry. The redshirt freshman started the next three games before Rosier took the job back for the last two contests. But a third loss in a row last Saturday, in bad weather against Duke, has prompted a switch back to Perry for Saturday’s game against Georgia Tech.

Perry has been slightly better than Rosier, with 11 touchdowns passes in 105 pass attempts compared to six in 144 attempts for Rosier. They’ve both throw five interceptions, with sub-par completion percentages (53.5 percent for Rosier; 52.4 percent for Perry). Rosier has scored six rushing touchdowns, but all in all, it doesn’t seem to matter who’s playing quarterback for the Hurricanes. Redshirt freshman Cade Weldon and true freshman Jerren Williams, the other two quarterbacks on the roster, have combined for six pass attempts this season.

In some deference to having three quarterbacks who are either a redshirt or true freshman this year, head coach Mark Richt does not have a quarterback commit in his 2019 recruiting class right now. When asked a question along that line during his weekly press conference on Tuesday, Richt pointed to keeping all options open.

"We are always on the lookout,” “I do think the young quarterbacks [we have] are talented and they have the skill set to get the job done. I think they are learning as they go. I do believe these guys have the ability to get it done, but we are always open-minded about finding ways to get us better at the quarterback position and every position across the board."

During his time as the starter at Clemson, Bryant was 16-2, including a 38-3 win over Miami in the ACC Championship Game last year. So there’s some familiarity there, but the Hurricanes coaching staff won’t be able to play a revenge game angle since Clemson is not on their schedule in 2019. Although they could meet in the ACC Championship Game.

Bryant has ties to other schools that may ultimately bind (see Chad Morris at Arkansas), but he’s clearly surveying all his options. Even with a late entrance into the fray, Richt needs to find a proven quarterback for next year and a push for the best grad transfer signal-caller available is a no-brainer.
