Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is in theaters on Nov. 16, but is the highly-anticipated addition to the Harry Potter universe based on a book by J.K. Rowling?

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is almost here!

With the highly-anticipated film set in the Harry Potter universe hitting theaters on Nov. 16, The Crimes of Grindelwald is the second of five films in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

But is it, like the original Harry Potter books, based off of a book by J.K. Rowling?

Well, no, and yes.

The Crimes of Grindelwald is not based on a book by JKR. There is no book by this title or with this subject matter.

With Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, we at least had a book with the same title, even if the content was different (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was a guide to different Harry Potter creatures all over the world that was written by Newt Scamander).

However, both of these are loosely based off of books by Rowling, and that cannot be forgotten. Some of the key characters have been mentioned in other Harry Potter books, and the history of the Wizarding World can give you a bit of a hint as to what might/could happen in the rest of the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

While there is no specific book by JKR for The Crimes of Grindelwald, we will, in all likelihood, receive a screenplay that can be bought as was the case with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and The Cursed Child.

The screenplays are pretty interesting because you get to have an insight into a little bit more than the movie gives you, making them a must-own for every Harry Potter lover.
