Wondering when Fantasic Beasts the Crimes of Grindelwald is set? Don’t worry! We’ve got you covered.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald makes its highly-anticipated appearance in theaters across the country on Nov. 16, but the timeline of the Fantastic Beasts franchise is still in question.

Because there are no books for these films, we can only really know when things happen based on context clues such as interview answers and the eventual screenplay. This is different than the original Harry Potter series in that we have very specific dates for momentous events.

So when exactly is Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald set?

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them took place in 1926 in New York. You can get a few clues from the outfits, the environment and slang, but in the official timeline, it says 1926.

Sticking to the ’20s theme, The Crimes of Grindelwald takes place a year later in 1927. While that does not seem like a long time since we last saw our favorite characters, much has happened in that time — most notably Grindelwald escaping from prison and attempting once again to pit the muggle — uh, I mean no-maj — and Wizarding Worlds against each other in a massive war.

It should be noted that Grindelwald was defeated by Dumbledore in 1945 (as was the end of World War II which coincides with the Grindelwald storyline), so there has to be a somewhat significant time jump somewhere in Fantastic Beasts franchise if we are to draw it out in just five movies.

There is a 19-year gap between the first Fantastic Beasts film and the defeat of Grindelwald, so Fantastic Beasts has to pick up the pace very soon.
