Who is the Redskins’ backup for Alex Smith?

Alex Smith suffered what appeared to be a season-ending injury, and now the Redskins will have to turn to Colt McCoy.
In the middle of a season where things were going pretty smoothly for the Washington Redskins — something that certainly doesn’t happen every year — Washington fans were pulled right back down to earth in brutal fashion on Sunday.
Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith suffered a leg injury in the third quarter of Washington’s Week 11 game against the Houston Texans. Barring the miracle of all miracles, Smith’s season is over, and the Redskins will have no choice but to turn to Smith’s backup, 32-year-old Colt McCoy — who hasn’t thrown a pass in the NFL since 2015.
There is no word on Smith’s injury just yet, but if you were among the unfortunate group of people who watched in the injury happen on TV, then you are aware of how gruesome it was. Smith was tackled and landed awkwardly on his right leg, and it appeared as if the bone snapped.
This isn’t a new experience for Redskins fans, as it was very reminiscent of the leg injury that ended the career of quarterback Joe Theismann back in 1985. Incredibly, Smith’s injury happened on the 33rd anniversary of Theismann’s injury.

McCoy will be taking over at quarterback for the 6-3 Redskins, who looked like they might have been on their way to winning a weak NFC East. With McCoy replacing Smith, who is considered one of the better quarterbacks in the league, it’s very difficult to see the Redskins keeping up the pace they’ve been winning games at to this point.
For the Redskins and their fans, and especially for Smith, this is about as tough as it gets in sports. Now, Washington has to move on and play Thanksgiving afternoon against the Dallas Cowboys, who find themselves with ample life in the East.
