5 moves that would equal a perfect Yankees offseason
1. Sign Manny Machado
Machado is not a perfect baseball player. Some people would argue anyone looking for the type of contract he’ll demand this winter should actually be perfect. We’re inclined to believe that Machado’s consistent All-Star production is more than enough to justify the Yankees’ interest in his services.
Shortstop isn’t Machado’s best position, but his defensive struggles there are overrated. He went from a negative defender for the Orioles to a plus glove for the Dodgers. That means he’s absolutely capable of filling in for Gregorius until he’s ready to return from his extended stint on the disabled list.
The larger question is what the Yankees might do with Machado after Didi gets back onto the field. Third base is the best play to deploy him on a consistent basis. Miguel Andujar had an excellent rookie season, but his defensive struggles are a legitimate concern for the organization.
It’s very possible the Yankees will opt to move Andujar. That could mean a position change or a trade. Either one could create room for Machado to start consistently at the hot corner.
If the Yankees are going to overtake the Red Sox, they need to acquire someone capable of helping them reconnect with their “Evil Empire” roots. Machado is the perfect villain to bring joy to Yankee fans around the globe.
