College Football Results Against The Spread Week 13 2018

This was the largest college football week of the season, and also the last full college football week of the season. Conference championship week this week has just 14 games, then we have the 40 or so bowl games. Those combined don’t come close to this week’s 64 college football games!

I only got half my pick em picks right, but I knew I was picking those crazy trying to make up ground. I was more safe with the spread picks.

Here we will recap my picks against the spread. The winner against the spread will be in BOLD. My result will follow. Let’s get to it!

In case you want to follow along:

Picks for week 12

Ball State at Miami(OH)(-17.5): HIT! Neal didn’t play, so the game when about how I thought. Alonzo Smith ran all over the Cardinals.

Northern Illinois(-5.5) at Western Michigan: MISS! Who would have thought that WMU would be bowl bound after they way they started this year?

Colorado State at Air Force(-13.5): HIT! Colorado State got a moral victory of sorts. Of course, this defense is going to be smarting all off season after giving up 260 rushing yards in the game to a fullback! Option offense or not……A FULLBACK!

Mississippi State(-10.5) at Mississippi: MISS! So much for thinking the Rebs would show up in the only Bowl game they are eligible for. This was another embarrassing loss in the Egg Bowl at home for Ole Miss.

Texas(-14.5) at Kansas: HIT! It is a bit disappointing that the Jayhawks didn’t play this well while Beaty still was employed, but the Jayhawks played hard for him until the end. Next up is the Les Miles era in Lawrence. Win or lose, it’s going to be very interesting, especially with what Kansas has coming back.

Nebraska at Iowa(-8.5): HIT! It looked like Iowa was going to run off with this game. That is when we saw the difference between Nebraska 2017 and Nebraska 2018. The team fought back. They wouldn’t have done that last year.

Akron at Ohio(-23.5): MISS!  This was never close, but Ohio still didn’t cover.

Buffalo(-14.5) at Bowling Green: HIT! Who wants to play the Bulls in a bowl game? Anyone? A middle tier team from a power five conference is going to be tested a lot more than they want if they draw the Bulls.

Central Michigan at Toledo(-19.5): HIT! Well, hello Toledo! Glad you remembered that the season was still going on!

Eastern Michigan(-13.5) at Kent State: MISS! Kent actually outplayed EMU, but couldn’t quite pull out the win.

Houston at Memphis(-7.5): HIT! Truth be told, the Houston offense wasn’t that bad. The defense just couldn’t stop Darrell Henderson, much like I expected.

Arkansas at Missouri(-23.5): MISS! I should have known better. Drew Lock put on a show in his last home game.

Coastal Carolina at South Alabama: MISS! The Chanticleers squandered a chance at their first bowl game losing this heartbreaker.

East Carolina at Cincinnati(-17.5): HIT! This was easy money, despite my best efforts to convince myself that it wasn’t.

Virginia(-4.5) at Virginia Tech: MISS! A horrible first half doomed the Hoos, but they still pushed this to overtime.

Oregon(-18.5) at Oregon State: MISS! I think the Beavers thought the game was next weekend. They sure didn’t show up this one.

Central Florida(-14.5) at South Florida: HIT! UCF may have won, but they lost the war. They are going to have a really hard time beating Memphis without McKenzie Milton under center. He still led the game in passing despite leaving the game in the second quarter.

Oklahoma(-2.5) at West Virginia: HIT! Here is the actual transcript of the coin toss at midfield: Kyler Murray “You see the over/under is the highest ever?” Will Grier “You seen your defense? We’ll hold up our end of the bargain.” Kyler: “Hold my beer.” At some point it becomes an insult to defenses everywhere to call Oklahoma’s defense a defense, but they came up with a couple of huge plays when they needed them to have Oklahoma sniffing the playoffs once again.

Washington at Washington State(-2.5): MISS! Not to take anything away from Washington, but I knew as soon as it started snowing that the Leaches were doomed. Washington State is not built to play in that kind of weather. Washington does better the more sloppy the game is, so it fit them perfectly. If this had been a clear night, I still think Wazzu wins, but it was a great game none the less.

Michigan(-4.5) at Ohio State: MISS! Harbaugh is the first Michigan coach to start 0-4 against Ohio State, but this loss was worse than the other three, and not just because of the score. Michigan game into this game with an aura of invincibility on defense, giving up just 14 points per game, then gets gutted by Ohio State. The same Ohio State offense that has struggled most of the month of November. This was a choke job to end all choke jobs.

Georgia Tech at Georgia(-17.5): MISS! Ramblin Wreck is right! The final score belies just how much of a blowout this actually was. The Dawgs were up 45-7 before they let their foot off their throats.

Florida(-7.5) at Florida State: HIT! The longest bowl streak the world has even known had ended at 36. Did Jimbo really leave this big of a mess in the Florida panhandle? It certainly didn’t seem like it…..

Syracuse at Boston College(-6.5): HIT! Gift points are the best! So is Eric Dungey when he can stay healthy.

Marshall(-2.5) at Florida International: MISS! I should have flipped this. Of course, this wasn’t as close as the score indicates. The Panthers got some garbage in that fourth quarter and almost accidentally won.

Western Kentucky at Louisiana Tech(-10.5): MISS! This was just a poor game all around for the Bulldogs, but hey, they still have a bowl waiting for them.

Baylor vs. Texas Tech(-5.5) at Jerry World: MISS! Honestly, Kingsbury deserved to be fired after this one. I do like the way he coaches, but at some point, results have to come.

Purdue(-3.5) at Indiana: HIT! I’m really shocked that the battle for the Oaken Bucket was this low scoring.

Navy at Tulane(-7.5): MISS! Well, Tulane did win, but they were nowhere near covering this.

North Carolina State(-6.5) at North Carolina:  MISS! I’m having a hard enough time without getting bent over by half points in overtime…..

Wake Forest at Duke: HIT! How’s that for capping off a season! Destroying your rival in their stadium by 52 points is one hell of a statement! That rockets a very dangerous Wake team to a bowl game as well.

Old Dominion(-7.5) at Rice: MISS! The more this season wears on, the more baffled I am that Old Dominion beat the Hokies. Virginia Tech was a special breed of terrible most of the year, but ODU has looked even worse.

New Mexico State at Liberty: MISS! Those halves are really pissing in my Cheerios…..

Georgia Southern(-10.5) at Georgia State: MISS! I should have known better here too. Rivalry week does weird things to people.

Wyoming(-6.5) at New Mexico: HIT! I should have put more on this based on Wyoming’s running game alone.

Troy at Appalachian State(-10.5): MISS! Another stupid half point loss.

Southern Mississippi(-13.5) at UTEP: HIT! I’m pretty sure the Miners are glad that 2018 is over. This was a brutal season for them.

Louisiana at Louisiana-Monroe(-2.5): MISS! There’s a reason I wouldn’t touch this one. It was as good of a game as I was expecting though.

UAB at Middle Tennessee State: MISS! This was easily the worst game the Blazers have played all year. Did they learn enough to put up a fight in the rematch this weekend?

Stanford(-6.5) at UCLA: HIT! I’m glad I got in on this one when I did, because it was up at 7.5 before kickoff. Meaning all that bet Stanford at that line lost.

Auburn at Alabama(-24.5): MISS! I was feeling pretty good about this pick at halftime. Then Alabama got tired of toying with the mouse…..

Maryland at Penn State(-13.5): MISS! The Penn State defense locked down on McFarland, something the Buckeyes couldn’t quite solve.

Illinois(-16.5) at Northwestern(-16.5): HIT! Boring, methodical Northwestern. Boring until they methodically beat you.

Pittsburgh at Miami(-5.5): MISS! Who would have thought that Pitt was more of a mess than Miami? Not me…..

Arizona State(-1.5) at Arizona: MISS! Well, this just pisses me off. First, I was right. The Territory Cup is headed to Tempe. Second, if the Sun Devils hadn’t gone for two and missed, I would have still got this. Instead, it’s another half point getting me. That’s a half dozen already!

Minnesota at Wisconsin(-11.5): MISS! How can we be expected to pick Minnesota? They have been all over the place in the last month. Unfortunately for me, the Gophers are bowl bound, so there is one more impossible game to pick.

SMU(-3.5) at Tulsa: SMU was this close to a bowl game. Then they drop one to a two win Tulsa team. In all fairness, Tulsa was one of the better two win teams in the country. They have had some hard luck this year.

Temple(-30.5) at Connecticut: HIT! I should have put more on this one too. UConn scored, but it was a garbage touchdown in the first quarter.

Arkansas State(-14.5) at Texas State: HIT! I’m tempted to give myself extra points since I predicted the Red Wolves by at least 20. That should count, right?

Rutgers at Michigan State(-26.5): HIT! The two teams didn’t even combine for 27 points. Easy money!

Tennessee at Vanderbilt(-6.5): HIT! Yep. No problems here. A very forgettable season for the Vols, and they still almost made a bowl.

Charlotte at Florida Atlantic(-17.5): HIT! Well, it was more than a touch high considering Charlotte won outright. My goal is to see Charlotte in a bowl next year.

South Carolina at Clemson(-26.5): HIT! I had to sweat this one in the second half. Still, SC hanging around for a half should help the confidence come bowl time.

Kentucky(-16.5) at Louisville: HIT! I don’t know why I wasn’t so high on this one. Louisville’s defense would get covered by a high school team right now…..

More from College Football Odds

Kansas State at Iowa State(-13.5): MISS! Iowa State exorcised their own demons, but not mine.

San Jose State at Fresno State(-31.5): MISS! This is on me. SJSU adjusted down the stretch and I didn’t.

Colorado at California(-12.5): HIT! A half finally went my way! I didn’t think it would after the Ralphies spotted Cal three touchdowns in the first.

North Texas(-24.5) at UTSA: MISS! Does the Roadrunners losing by three at home count as finishing on a high note? After seeing some of their games this year, it probably should.

LSU at Texas A&M(-3.5): HIT! 115 points Oklahoma and West Virginia? Is that all you got? Joe Burrow and Kellen Mond say hold my Southern Comfort. In all seriousness though, this game should have been over in the first overtime. That play by Sternberger sure looked like a catch and fumble. Still, it’s a win for me either way, and one of the most legendary college football games ever! The worst part? Ed Orgeron had to stand soaked in Gatorade for all seven of those overtimes!

Notre Dame(-12.5) at USC: MISS! Well, if USC was going to pull this, they could have at least won the game!

Oklahoma State(-5.5) at TCU: MISS! Oklahoma State was so up and down this year, I shouldn’t be surprised. What are the chances that the schools themselves had some sort of gentlemen’s agreement to get TCU to a bowl?

Nevada(-13.5) at UNLV: HIT! Yep, the Wolfpack didn’t even win outright! In this case, what happens in Vegas does not stay in Vegas. Can you imagine where UNLV would be had Armani Rogers been healthy all year?

BYU at Utah(-11.5): HIT! Utah was very lucky to win this game at all. They were down 20 at the half and scored all 35 of their points in the second half.

Utah State at Boise State(-2.5): MISS! Once again, Boise just goes out and does what they do. Will it result in a New Year’s Six Bowl?

Hawaii at San Diego State(-17.5): HIT! This was a giant win for Hawaii, and I can’t say I’m shocked. SDSU has been toeing this line for a while, and could be in for a rough home bowl game this year.

This was not the week I was hoping to get out of rivalry week. A lot of the games that I thought would stay close didn’t. Some of the ones that should have been blowouts weren’t. And my four and five point picks were rough again, mostly because of half points not being my friend this week. Just how bad was it? I’m afraid to look!

I only went 30-34 this week, lowering my season mark to 365-359. My 55% goal at the start of the season is now an impossible task even if I get every pick right from here on out. My new goal is .500. A respectable mark, but still a bit disappointing. Now we have to check the points, and this could be bad.

This week’s totals follow the number. The season totals are in parentheses.

1. 3-5 (55-52) = 3
2. 10-15(144-133) = 22
3. 12-5 (102-96) = 18
4. 4-5 (41-46) = -20
5. 1-4(23-27) = -20

I actually ended up losing less points than last week. I was down ten this week thanks to the famous five point failures. I am still up three points on the season, and at this point I am just hoping to have something to put in my bank, not break the casinos.
