Packers fire head coach Mike McCarthy

Hours after another loss, the Green Bay Packers made it official that they are parting ways with head coach Mike McCarthy.

To say that this season has been a disappointment for the Green Bay Packers would be an understatement. Apparently, that disappointment meant that head coach Mike McCarthy’s time in Green Bay was cut short much sooner than some expected.

On Sunday, the Packers lost another tough one to the Arizona Cardinals, falling 20-17. Just hours after the loss, the Packers made it official that they had relieved coach McCarthy of his duties, making the move official on Twitter.

Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin will be taking over as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Philbin has spent several stints with the Packers coaching staff, and will carry out the rest of the season running the team.

The Packers came into the season with a healthy Aaron Rodgers, a new defensive coordinator and sky-high expectations. Fans expected the Packers to be a Super Bowl contender in 2018, but instead have watched the team go 0-6 on the road and fall out of the NFC playoff race at 4-7-1.

Considering the Packers have the same record as the Cleveland Browns right now, it makes sense why the team let McCarthy go.

Still, this was a pretty big surprise from a team that has been so patient with McCarthy, who has been the head coach for Green Bay since 2006. It was obvious that a change was needed, however, and now the team will have more than a handful of qualified candidates to choose from when selecting their next head coach.
