Kick off the holiday season by watching the ceremonial lighting of the National Christmas Tree. Find it online here.

It might be hard to believe judging from the prevalence of holiday decorations and Christmas music, but the true Christmas season has just begun. While retail has seemingly pushed the beginning of their busiest season up by just a few days every year, Christmas itself hasn’t moved, and the beginning of December is still when some of the bigger rituals surrounding the holiday really begin.

One of these, of course, is the lighting of the national Christmas tree in Washington DC. That is almost a ceremonial event and features words from the President, as well as a few performances.  Past performers at the event have included recognizable names such as Kelly Clarkson and The Lumineers, as well as lesser-known acts like Afro Blue and Boys II Bowties

The higher profile names are largely absent from this year’s gathering, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The performers who will be appearing at this year’s celebration are Abby Anderson, Antonio Sabato Jr., Anthony Kearns, The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Gabby Barrett, John Driskell Hopkins, LOCASH, Matthew West, Paul Cardall, Spensha Baker, and Thompson Square. The show will also acknowledge and honor the military, with the U.S. Army Band making an appearance.

The main attraction for the special is, obviously, the national tree. But there will be others included in the event. In fact, all 50 states, along with each U.S. territory and the District of Columbia will have their own, smaller tree. That brings the total to 56 trees that will be ceremonially lit for the event (and the holiday season).
