2. Pete Carmichael Jr.

Since 2006, first as as quarterbacks coach then passing game coach and now as offensive coordinator (since 2009), Carmichael has worked under Sean Payton and around Drew Brees with the New Orleans Saints. He has occasionally come up as a head coaching candidate, but has never seemed particularly likely to leave the Saints.

Some offensive coordinators who came up under an offensive-minded head coach have had issues when they become a head coach. But Carmichael has been allowed to call plays frequently by Payton, so a move up to being a head coach should not come with a hint of being a single-minded control freak (looking at you, Brad Childress).

If Payton is an example of any two things the most as a head coach and offensive mind, it’s creativity and how to foster a long, fruitful relationship with a veteran quarterback. Carmichael has surely picked up on both of those things in spades through the years, which would serve him well with the Packers. The primary question is if Green Bay will have interest, and how far-reaching their search for McCarthy’s replacement will actually be.
