3. Darrell Henderson, RB, Memphis

The Memphis Tigers seemed to be ready to make a statement in the AAC Championship Game as they made yet another bid to end UCF’s unbeaten streak. In the end, thanks to some heroics from UCF backup quarterback Darrell Mack Jr., the Knights came back and won. However, it was running back Darrell Henderson who largely put them in that position with another phenomenal performance.

For the day, Henderson finished with 16 carries for 210 yards and three touchdowns. Oh, and he also threw a touchdown pass in the game, adding two receptions for nine yards as well. What’s most impressive is how much of that work came in the first half as Memphis seemed to be running away. Henderson had touchdown runs of 62, 12 and 82 yards in the first half alone, in addition to throwing his touchdown toss in the first 30 minutes as well.

In truth, that’s the type of thing that Henderson did for the Tigers all season. The junior running back was time and again a powder-keg ready to explode and leave his mark on a game as a versatile and explosive playmaker, the catalyst for one of the most potent offensive teams in the country.

On the season, Henderson finished with 214 carries for 1,909 yards (an incredible 8.9 yards per carry average) and 22 touchdowns while also adding 295 receiving yards and three more scores. While the 2018 season and Heisman race were largely about the quarterback, Henderson certainly made a bid for at least one running back to be considered.
