Galatasaray won their last home encounter with a Portuguese club, beating Benfica 2-1 during the Champions League group stages back in 2015. The Turkish Super Lig champions have perhaps been a little fortunate in Europe this season, firstly by being drawn in the tournament’s weakest group, and then by still being in with a chance of a Europa League spot despite not having scored in four games. Indeed, their only goals in this season’s CL all came in the 3-0 home win over Lokomotiv Moscow on the opening match-day.
Porto won the reverse fixture in Portugal 1-0 at the start of October, continuing Galatasaray’s woeful away form. Remarkably, that was the first time that these two European stalwarts had ever met in a competitive fixture. Porto did visit Turkey in last season’s Champions League, however, when they played out a 1-1 draw with Galatasaray’s Istanbul rivals Besiktas. The Portuguese title holders have already won the group, and with a domestic away game at Santa Clara coming up on Saturday, they’re likely to rest players here.
