The bowl season kicks off with six games tomorrow. It’s almost like a whole football Saturday! I will not make a pick for the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl. I wouldn’t be doing you any justice there. The only 1-AA teams I have watched are North Dakota State and Youngstown State. I wouldn’t be making an educated pick.
However, for the rest of the bowls, you will get my picks against the spread and point wagers just like I did all season long. I had a solid regular season, but I can make it look a whole lot better with a strong bowl season!

Arizona State vs. (21)Fresno State(-4.5) at Las Vegas, NV(3):
Arizona State 7-5, 5-4 (2nd Pac 12 South):
Wins: vs. UTSA(49-7), vs. Michigan State(16-13), vs. Oregon State(52-24), at USC(38-35), vs. Utah(38-20), vs. UCLA(31-28), at Arizona(41-40)
Losses: at San Diego State(21-28), at Washington(20-27), at Colorado(21-28), vs. Stanford(13-20), at Oregon(29-31)
This is a very dangerous offense with the explosive Eno Benjamin in the backfield. The Sun Devils are going to be missing playmaking WR N’Keal Harry, who is entering the draft. Manny Wilkins is a very good and very athletic quarterback. The dirty little secret that most ignore is how many wide open receivers Wilkins overthrew during the season. It was a problem even with the explosive Harry out there who can run just about anything down. What is it going to be like without him?
Record vs. bowl teams: 1-3
(21)Fresno State 11-2, 8-1(1st Mountain West):
Wins: vs. Idaho(79-13), at UCLA(38-14), vs. Toledo(49-27), at Nevada(21-3), vs. Wyoming(27-3), at New Mexico(38-7), vs.Hawaii(50-20), at UNLV(48-3), vs. San Diego State(23-14), vs. San Jose State(31-13), at Boise State(19-16)
Losses: at Minnesota(14-21), at Boise State(17-24)
Fresno showed just how explosive they were in the opener, hanging 79 on Idaho. Minnesota was able to slow them down before their defense got hurt. They avenged the other loss on the Smurf Turf in a blizzard to punch their ticket to Vegas.
Oregon State transfer Marcus McMaryion could be picked in next year’s draft. He is that good. With a lot of good receivers headlined by KeeSean Johnson, this is a really tough team to beat and a really tough offense to stop.
Record vs. bowl teams: 5-1
Prediction:
Arizona State is missing Harry and their defense has been a sore spot for much of the season. This matchup wasn’t lining up well for them even before Harry flew the coop.
Despite McMaryion’s time in the Pac 12, he never faced the Sun Devils. Not that it really matters. Wilkins overthrows receivers and this defense can’t cover these receivers. I don’t know that this game stays that close, but I am lowering the bet because Herm Edwards won some games that he really didn’t have any business winning this year. And because Eno Benjamin is going to have a big game. Just how big will determine whether the Sun Devils win or lose.
Pick: Fresno State
