NBA Rookie Rankings: 5 guys team should be concerned about
1. Jerome Robinson
The Clippers made two lottery picks in the 2018 NBA Draft. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has greatly exceeded expectations. Jerome Robinson, in sharp contrast, looks like a flop.
Doc Rivers has a lot of guards to choose from on his roster, but Robinson is having a tough time getting on the floor. He’s only played eight games on the season for a grand total of 40 minutes. That’s not a good sign for a 21-year-old guard who came into the league with a reputation as being an advanced scorer.
What’s even more concerning for Robinson is that he’s shot the ball pretty well in his brief game action. He’s hit 50 percent from the field and over 56 percent from three. If Rivers isn’t allowing him to build on that type of shooting it’s clear there are other flaws in his game.
Mainly, he lacks the quick-twitch athleticism required to guard anyone. Robinson’s got quality size for the guard position, but he gets blown by on a regular basis. Unless he finds a way to become something approaching an adequate defender, he may need to get a passport after his guaranteed rookie deal is done.
The Clippers should be reasonably happy to have hit on one of their first round picks, but in the end, striking out on Robinson may come back to haunt them.
