4. Andrew Luck (LW: 5)

The Colts might be the third team since the merger in 1970 to start 1-5 and reach the playoffs. Luck has been incredible coming back from his shoulder injury, throwing for 34 touchdowns and 3.951 yards. Indianapolis will likely be a sixth seed if it reaches the postseason, and nobody will want to see the Colts.

3. Philip Rivers (LW: 4)

Rivers is 36 years old and he’s arguably having the best season of his career. The Chargers are 11-3 and in contention for the AFC’s top seed, perhaps positioned to get Rivers his first Super Bowl trophy. It’s hard to root against the father of eight (soon nine).

2. Drew Brees (LW: 2)

Brees and the Saints are the odds-on favorites to reach the Super Bowl for their second time. At 39 years old, Brees is in the MVP race with a couple of studs around him in Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara. New Orleans has to feel great about its chances in January… and February.

1. Patrick Mahomes (LW: 1)

Mahomes maintains his status as the MVP frontrunner. The Chiefs lost in brutal fashion on Thursday night, but Mahomes was terrific with two more touchdowns and no turnovers. Kansas City still has control on the top seed in the AFC, but likely needs to beat Seattle in prime time on the road. Can Mahomes step up to meet the task?
