5 things the Yankees must do if they miss out on Manny Machado
2. Sign Marwin Gonzalez
Moustakas can play a couple of positions, but Gonzalez can play almost anywhere. His ability to play both corner outfield spots, first base and shortstop makes him a highly coveted free agent.
The Astros initially had some interest in keeping Gonzalez in Houston, but their recent move to sign Michael Brantley takes them out of the running. Houston’s decision not to make their super sub a qualifying offer also means he can be signed without surrendering a compensatory draft pick. That’s an important bonus for the Yankees.
It’s unclear at the moment just what type of deal Gonzalez is looking for. At 29 years of age, this is probably his one big chance to cash in via free agency. That means he’ll be looking for pretty significant dollars and years.
The Yankees would do well to sign him to a four-year contract paying him somewhere around $12 million per season. That’s a hefty price for a guy who hit .247/.324/.409 last year, but he almost provides you an entire bench by himself. For a team that has significant injury concerns already, Gonzalez can provide great value by providing protection all over the diamond.
