The Southeast division-leading Hornets will look to improve on their poor play on the road when they face the disappointing Wizards on Saturday.

One can make the point that the Southeast Division has become the red-headed stepchild of the NBA, but that doesn’t bother the Charlotte Hornets.

The Bugs share the division lead with the resurgent Miami Heat, and they’ll look to take full ownership of the division when they head to the Nation’s Capitol to face the disappointing and injury-riddled Washington Wizards on Saturday night.

The Wizards were the team that many NBA pundits (including, yours truly) picked to win this division, but injuries and internal strife have doomed Washington’s season so far. Remarkably, at 13-23, the Wizards sit just five games back of the Hornets, which shows just how awful the Southeast has gotten.

If Charlotte doesn’t improve on the road, they may have time to catch up to them.

While the Horners have been solid at home (13-7), Charlotte has yet to figure out how to translate their home success on the road, where they’re just 4-10. Charlotte is currently on a two-game losing streak outside of North Carolina, and if the Hornets want to be a legit darkhorse in the East, they have to turn around their play on the road.

Washington has to turn around their season as a whole.

To say it’s been a rough season in Washington is an understatement. Struggling to get through internal strife and injuries, the Wizards have yet to really put their game into gear to reclaim the Southeast. They’re fading fast, sitting on a three-game losing streak that culminated in a 101-92 loss to the basement Chicago Bulls. Star off-guard Bradley Beal scored 32 points and dished out five assists, but he didn’t get much help from his supporting cast as the Wizards dropped the opener of a three-game homestand that will wrap up against the improved Atlanta Hawks.

This is the first of four meetings between these two rivals.
