Ravens HC John Harbaugh

John Harbaugh

Denver reportedly planned to target John Harbaugh when the overwhelming idea was that the Ravens would let him go after this season. But, when Baltimore announced that they planned to retain Harbaugh for 2019 and on, it appeared the Broncos would have to set their sights elsewhere.

However, Adam Schefter reported Sunday that teams are expected to reach out to the Ravens about the potential availability of Harbaugh via trade. Trades involving coaches are quite uncommon in the NFL, but they’ve happened before — most notably the 2002 Jon Gruden trade.

Harbaugh’s coaching style would fit well in Denver. Harbaugh has led defensive-minded teams in Baltimore for years, even leading them to a Super Bowl title in 2012. The Broncos have been a top-10 defensive team for close to a decade now. With perennial Pro Bowler Von Miller and first-round pick Bradley Chubb at his disposal, Harbaugh would certainly have pieces on defense to work with.

With the Ravens suddenly thriving and making a late-season push toward the AFC North crown, it’ll certainly take Denver’s best offer to pry him away. But if they’re looking to establish a tough, winning culture, there aren’t a lot of guys out there who fit the bill much better than Harbaugh.
