The Oregon Ducks and Michigan State Spartans hope to cap off disappointing seasons with a win on New Year’s Eve in the 2018 Redbox Bowl.

For the 2018 regular season, both the Oregon Ducks and Michigan State Spartans have been all over the map. Each team picked up a win over an in-conference top-10 team, while both teams also lost to some of the worst teams in their conference. That’s the type of year it’s been for these two teams, which makes it fitting that they’re going up against one another in the 2018 Redbox Bowl on New Year’s Eve.

The biggest news for Oregon coming into the Redbox Bowl hasn’t been about the now necessarily, but rather the 2019 season. Quarterback Justin Herbert, a likely first-round pick for the 2019 NFL Draft, is staying in Eugene for another year. That could certainly galvanize this Ducks team as the passer fuels a highly potent offense.

Subsequently, that offense makes things interesting against the Michigan State team. Whether it’s been Brian Lewerke or Rocky Lombardi at quarterback, this Spartans offense has struggled immensely this season, averaging under 20 points per game on the year. Their defense, thankfully, has been quite good, but it’s hard for them to score with consistency.

As such, if Oregon can find some holes in the Michigan State defense early on and build a lead, this one could be done early. Then again, the Ducks defense has been generous this season, meaning that Sparty could come up huge and break out. Either way, there’s a ton of intrigue for this matchup.

Especially considering his decision to return to school next season, people will be watching Herbert and Oregon closely in the Redbox Bowl. Then again, people will also be watching this Michigan State team hoping that they can find their form at long last. Either way, it’s a game with a ton of variance that should provide some fireworks.
