When does Black Lightning season 2 return on the CW?

Black Lightning, along with the rest of the CW’s DC Comics tv shows, will continue its holiday break this week.

The mid-season finale left the entire Pierce family kind of in flux. Jennifer and Khalil had (finally) headed out of Freeland, managing to avoid the team of Black Lightning and Thunder, who tried to find and stop them (or at least Jennifer). Also, there seemed to be a new opponent, presumably hired by Tobias, on his way. This meta could at least teleport, and was last seen trashing (and shooting up) a bar somewhere else. He headed to Freeland after a phone conversation with… someone.

That someone could well have been Tobias Whale. Though he has often taken a back seat in season 2 to the other villains, his time should be coming. First there was Looker, a meta who used her control over a silvery ‘substance’ to control entire populations and enforce her segregationist views. She was around for a few episodes but was killed during a fight when she got impaired by a piece of machinery. Lovely.

Her place was quickly taken by Cutter, another woman, this time hired by Tobias. Cutter, as her name suggests, used knives, and had some sort of telekinetic control over them as well. She went out even quicker, captured by Jennifer and left for Jefferson (and Henderson) to deal with. So the show has cycled through a few short-term villains, it should bring Tobias back to the forefront and find a focus or the remainder of the season.

Lynn and her work with the pod children has largely fallen by the wayside, but that storyline was quite important to the first part of the season, so hopefully it comes back. Also because it would be much more interesting to explore what was done to the children (and the consequences) than simply cycle through interchangeable villains each week, even if they have cool connections to the comics.

When Black Lightning returns later this month it will be moving to Monday nights, so it will follow Arrow rather than The Flash. It returns on January 21, until then this trailer gives just a peek at the coming action, and Tobias certainly seems square in the middle of it.
