There are lots of stores and restaurants open on New Year’s Day, but if you’re waiting for a package you need to know whether mail is delivered.

With the prevalence of online shopping being able to expect a package is part of the daily routine for many people. But when it comes to mail delivery on holidays, everything shuts down in observance of the holiday. When it comes to mail delivery, there will be no mail delivered on New Year’s Day.

The United States Post Office celebrates New Year’s Day as an official holiday, which means post offices will be closed and no mail will be delivered. Major carriers like UPS and FedEx will also be closed on New Year’s Day, which means no packages will be delivered until the second day of the new year.

If you’re expecting a package, check the tracking information provided to see when you can expect the package given the holiday. With the mail shutdown you can expect that January 2 will be a busy day for delivery people as they rush to catch up. It’s possible that your packages could arrive a few days late as a result.

There’s a caveat to this rule these days, thanks to Amazon. Amazon has its own fleet of delivery people, which also includes USPS workers, and in some cases you might get an Amazon delivery on a holiday if there are workers delivering packages. However, this would be an exception more than a rule, so it isn’t something that should be expected.

Many stores and restaurants will be open on New Year’s Day, unlike the other major holidays. Banks will be closed, though, so plan accordingly. ATMs and mobile banking are good options. Post offices will reopen for regular business hours and mail delivery will resume on Wednesday, January 2.
