PGA DFS: The Sony Open Course

Welcome back readers of FantasyCPR, we are back with Round 2 PGA DFS DraftKings Showdown slate at the Sony Open. The Sony Open takes place at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii. Waialae is a Par 70, 7044 yards. Last year cut made it to 2-under par and it’s already sitting at 1-under par heading into the second day of the tournament. Let’s dive into the slate.

The PGA DFS Core Plays:

Justin Thomas ($10,300)

I’m looking for a really low day out of Justin Thomas today. The weather for the course sets up fairly well, Justin Thomas is still first in Par 4 scoring, and he ranks 4th in the field tee-to-green after round one.

Sadly, despite Thomas’s two eagle on the 9th and 18th holes, he was bad yesterday, carding 4 bogey’s. Thomas also finished three shots under par, despite losing 1.5 strokes putting yesterday. I look for Thomas to bounce back strong today and with the discount he’s not that difficult to fit into any of my lineups.

Zach Johnson ($8,700)

Zach Johnson played about as poorly as he could have played yesterday and he only shot 1-over par. Zach Johnson had a 64.29% driving accuracy, he only hit 55.56% greens in regulation. He was awful at approach yesterday, and he lost 1.5 strokes putting.

He made zero birdies, I think we can expect a turn around in round 2.  Going to be really low-owned play that has a great chance at low round on the day, but yesterday he was about as bad as he could be. Hopefully he got rid of all the rust.

Brian Gay ($7,300)

This is a guy that nobody likes to roster on one-day showdown slates, mainly because there’s no cut. Gay is incredibly consistent, especially in the short game and par 70 courses set up really nicely for him.

Gay is capable of getting hot at any time with the putter and he might put it all together today. I don’t know at this point how much of Gay I will be using today but I do like him as an intriguing pivot for this Round 2 showdown slate.

Shugo Imahira ($7,100)

If your a fan of following the day-to-day numbers and basing your plays of that, then you’re likely going to be roster Imahira after round one.

Imahira leads the field in ball striking and tee-to-green strokes gained. Also Imahira is right behind Cameron Smith for second in approach at this event. Imahira is a decent play at this price tag in showdown slates today. If Imahira is going to continue to play

Rory Sabbatini ($6,800)

Rory battled his way to 2-under par yesterday after what I thought was actually a bad round for him. He ended up losing 1.5 strokes putting on the day and basically was saved with the eagle, as he only had 1 birdie.

Sabbatini loves this course and is capable of going low at this event at any point. Sabbatini should build on this round and battle to make a pushing into the top-20 today. Sabbatini currently ranks 15 in the field in strokes gained off the tee and ranks 12th in approach. Look to a lot better day from Sabbatini today.
