NBA Trade Deadline 2019: The 30-team mega-deal that solves nothing and makes everyone mad
By Ian Levy
Boston Celtics
Sending out: Terry Rozier (MEM), Guerschon Yabusele (CLE)
Bringing in: Wayne Ellington (MIA), 2020 second-round pick (IND)
The Boston Celtics have struggled with consistency all season and while there are certainly experienced veterans on the roster, adding another certainly couldn’t hurt. The wing rotation is already deep, and with players capable of pulling from the outside, but they don’t really have anyone like Ellington (all due respect to Marcus Morris’ career-year), an elite shooter who excels running off screens and commands maximum off-ball attention from a defense. There may not be a ton of minutes or shots available for Ellington but his gravity can certainly be useful on offense and there will undoubtedly be some playoff scenarios and matchups where a player of his skill set would be a difference-maker.
In exchange for Ellington, and a window-dressing 2020 second-round pick from the Pacers, Boston is giving up Terry Rozier and Guerschon Yabusele. Rozier is headed for a contract the Celtics don’t want on their books and while they’d probably like to get a bit more for him, his rough play of late is eroding their leverage. Yabusele is still just 23 and, on paper, an interesting project. But the team has found less than 400 minutes for him over the past two seasons and it might be worth trading on his potential to land something a bit more tangible.
