New York Jets free agency 2019: Top 5 targets
3. Jadeveon Clowney, DE/LB Houston Texans
Gregg Williams probably can’t think of a better player to fit into his scheme other than Jadeveon Clowney. Why? Because Clowney can do damage as a defensive end and as an outside linebacker.
So, why is Clowney only No. 3 on this list? Because he is a prime candidate to be franchise tagged by his current team the Houston Texans. It seems unlikely that he slips into the open market, but if he does the Jets should do what they can do acquire his services.
Clowney has had consecutive seasons with 9+ sacks, and he has collected a total of 29 sacks in 62 games played. Injuries had limited him early in his career, but at age 25 he seems to be coming into his own.
Of course, playing on a defense that features J.J. Watt may inflate some player’s numbers, that isn’t the case with Clowney. He is a legit, game wrecking edge rusher who can also play as a down linemen.
Spotrac.com has his current market value set at $16.6 million. If he hits free agency, it may take a bit more to obtain him. Regardless, the Jets have the cap space, and their dire need for edge rushers would make him a top target.
