Newcastle’s 3-0 win against Cardiff in the last set of Premier League fixtures came at a good time. Having not won a game in six matches, Newcastle found themselves in the relegation zone. Manager Rafael Benitez has worked wonders with a paper thin squad and an owner who refuses to invest in the club. The visit of Manchester City doesn’t bode well for them, however.
It was always going to take a monumental performance from Newcastle to get the better of City, but City’s recent form has been out of this world. Since losing to Leicester on Boxing Day, City have won all 8 of their games including those in the cup competitions, conceding only two goals and scoring 33. They come in to this fixture knowing nothing less than a win will be a disappointment. They are second, four points off Liverpool, and need to maintain that pressure at the top.
Pep Guardiola knows how badly complacency can affect a team, and will stress this point to his players.

Manchester City come into this game with almost a full squad; Kevin De Bruyne has been playing regularly since his return from injury, and Benjamin Mendy returned to action in the FA Cup. They have ridden the tough Christmas period and are finding and maintaining their best form at the right time.
Newcastle are in very real danger of going down this year.
Teams around them are all picking up points bar Huddersfield and Fulham, and Newcastle have to keep up pace and put distance between them and the relegation zone. The message will be to keep things tight, try not to concede too many chances and knick something on the break.
