Hall of Fame running back Jerome Bettis is getting personal with his Super Bowl pick.

As soon as the New England Patriots won the AFC Championship it was almost automatic that they would not only be the overwhelming favorites to win, but that many people would pick the dynasty over the new kids on the block. For the most part, everyone has, except for Jerome Bettis.

It might be shocking that the former Super Bowl champion is going with the clear underdog, but when you think about it, it makes perfect sense.

“I’m rooting for the Rams in this scenario, I was drafted by them,” Bettis told FanSided’s Mark Carman. “I’m going with the Rams because the Patriots ended my season a few times. “It’s been a long time since they’ve had a championship there so i think they deserve one.”

Of course Bettis is going with the Rams here. Not only was he drafted by the Rams where he played in both Los Angeles and St. Louis with the team, but he spent a large chunk of his career as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Obviously all those hard fought battles between the Steelers and Patriots haven’t escaped Bettis’ mind, because he’s picking with his heart over his mind with this one.

But when it comes to the key to winning the game, it was simple for Bettis: stop the run.

“The team that stops the run the best is going to win the Super Bowl,” Bettis said. “Both of these teams, regardless of what it looks like, are power running football teams. So the team that can stop the run and get to the quarterback, that’s who wins.”

Both the Rams and Patriots have been nearly unstoppable with their running game in the postseason thus far. New England gashed both the Chargers and Chiefs for over 150 yards in each game, while the Rams had their way with the Dallas Cowboys’ defense in the NFC divisional round totaling 273 yards on the ground.

If Bettis has his way, as well as the rest of NFL fans who don’t root for the Patriots, then Los Angeles will be bringing the Lombardi trophy to the west coast.
