The Duke Blue Devils take a brief respite from ACC play as they face a tough St. John’s Red Storm squad on Saturday afternoon at Cameron Indoor.
If nothing else, the Duke Blue Devils have proven that their overtime loss to Syracuse early in January was a blip on the radar. Since then, head coach Mike Krzyzewski’s team has been rolling through ACC play, winning four-straight games, including knocking off Virginia. However, they take a brief hiatus from conference play on Saturday as they play the St. John’s Red Storm.
There were concerns about this Duke team following the loss to ‘Cuse given the injury status of Tre Jones. He’s back quicker than initially expected, though, and that’s been big for the Blue Devils. On top of that, they still have the fearsome trio of highly touted freshman with RJ Barrett, Cam Reddish and, of course, Zion Williamson.
St. John’s actually started off the season red hot, but have cooled off a bit in Big East play, sitting at just 4-5 in conference play. Shamorie Ponds is a bonafide stud, though, averaging north of 20 points per game this season and he’ll look to lead the way to take down a giant on Saturday.

When you look back at the annual meetings between these two teams, St. John’s traditionally plays Duke relatively tough. With Ponds in tow and a good overall team, that may not change, even with how loaded the Blue Devils are.

St. John’s has taken a step back as they’ve gotten into Big East play this year, but they are still not a team to be taken lightly and that has a ton of talent. Of course, they don’t have as much as this vaunted Duke team, so the Red Storm will have to play a near perfect game to go on the road and knock off the Blue Devils.
