Knicks fans already trying to recruit Kyrie Irving

Knicks fans want Kyrie Irving to leave Boston for New York this summer, and they made sure to let him know during Friday’s game.

Is it possible that Kyrie Irving, currently a superstar point guard for the Boston Celtics, could take his talents to Madison Square Garden next season and join up with the New York Knicks?

It could certainly happen if this season doesn’t end on an ideal note for Boston, and it’s a possibility that is very much on the radar of New York fans. They know that Irving may not be as wholeheartedly committed to the Celtics as he initially stated, and they would love nothing more than to see him ditch their rival city for the Big Apple this summer.

When the Celtics came to town on Friday night for an Atlantic Division contest with the Knicks, the fans at Madison Square Garden voiced their wishes, breaking out chants of “We want Kyrie!” in the middle of the game.

It’s no surprise that Knicks fans are jumping on this opportunity to make their desires known, especially with Irving himself in the building. The 26-year-old point guard recently shared some comments regarding his future in Boston which, at the very least, had to be a little bit unsettling for Celtics fans.

Asked if he still planned to re-sign with Boston in free agency, Irving responded with, “Ask me July 1.” He also went on to say that he doesn’t owe anything to anybody, and that he plans to do what is best for his career.

While that’s all fine and well, the part that doesn’t sit right with Celtics fans is that Irving publicly declared his loyalty to Boston just before the season got underway, saying that “If you guys will have me back, I plan on re-signing here.”

It’s possible that the slow start to Boston’s season, currently just fourth place in the Eastern Conference when they were expected to win the conference with ease, has caused Irving’s mindset to shift.

Meanwhile, the Knicks just shipped Kristaps Porzingis off to Dallas, opening up a boatload of cap space that could allow them to potentially sign two max free agents this summer. There are rumors of Kevin Durant, as well as Anthony Davis (who has requested a trade from the New Orleans Pelicans), possibly landing in New York.

If the opportunity for Irving to join that mix presents itself, it might just be too good for him to pass up.
