Kyler Murray continuing to flirt with the NFL

Spring training for the Oakland Athletics is just around the corner, but Kyler Murray is still showing interest in the NFL.

Kyler Murray’s future in professional sports is still very much up for debate. We don’t know if his future will consist of chasing down fly balls for the Oakland Athletics, or slinging passes for a quarterback-needy NFL franchise.

And at this point, it doesn’t seem like Murray himself knows much more than we do, though he is trying his best to get the most out of both sports as he can, while he still can.

According to a tweet from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Murray has committed to attending the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine, which as always will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in late February to early March.

It will be interesting to see how this unfolds. Murray was selected by the Athletics with the ninth-overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. Murray then went on to lead the Oklahoma Sooners football team to a 12-2 record during the 2018 season, amassing more than 4,000 passing yards and 42 touchdowns while throwing just seven interceptions. To little surprise, Murray was award the 2018 Heisman Trophy.

Since wrapping his final season of college football, Murray has unofficially hinted that he was leaning towards a career in professional baseball. But at the same time, he announced that he would indeed declare for the 2019 NFL Draft, leaving his future plans up in the air.

Murray has yet to rule out spring training with the Athletics, which begins towards the end of February. If he does indeed show up to Mesa, Arizona to train with the A’s — which would happen before the NFL combine — that could signify that he has officially chosen to play baseball in 2019.

If Murray passes on spring training, however, and shows up for the combine with the intent of getting selected in the first round of the NFL Draft, he would be taking a risk. No quarterback under six feet tall has been chosen in the first round since Ted Marchibroda back in 1953, and Murray checks in at just 5-foot-10. It’s also highly possible that he will slide in the draft due to the uncertainty surrounding his future in sports.

Regardless, for those of us who are fascinated to find out which career path Murray will end up taking, the next few weeks should be very interesting.
