Fresh off a big win over Wisconsin, Michigan hits the road looking to avoid a potential trap game against Penn State.

Throughout the season, it has become clear that the class of the Big Ten has been Michigan. Despite losing tournament hero Mo Wagner and two other contributors off last year’s squad, head coach John Beilein has the Wolverines back atop the conference standings.

The Wolverines started the year 17-0 and avenged their first loss of the season over the weekend,  pulling away from Wisconsin in the second half to earn a 61-52 victory in Ann Arbor. The Badgers had beaten Michigan at home back in January, so returning the favor was certainly sweet.

Senior Charles Matthews stepped up when his team needed him most, scoring 16 of his 18 points in the second half, while junior center Jon Teske put up 17 points and 12 rebounds to nearly matching Wisconsin star Ethan Happ (18 and 11) down low.

Michigan has now won two in a row and may be looking ahead to this weekend when they host Maryland as part of a stretch of six straight games against potential tournament teams to end the regular season. Before the Wolverines get there, however, they have to be careful to avoid falling into a trap and overlooking their matchup with Penn State tonight.

The Nittany Lions have been by far the worst team in the Big Ten, carrying an 8-15 record into this game, including a 1-11 mark in conference play. The one win was over Northwestern, a fellow bottom feeder, so on paper, it shouldn’t look like Penn State has a chance against a Michigan squad that has been dominant at times.

Penn State has been feisty of late, however, losing by four at Ohio State last Friday and taking Purdue to overtime in a 99-90 loss back on Jan. 31. The Nittany Lions haven’t lost by double digits since Jan. 13, when Michigan State beat them by 15 in East Lansing, so they should be capable of putting up a fight against Michigan.
