Ajax face Real Madrid at Johan Cruijff Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 13. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
The Champions League returns on Wednesday with Ajax hosting Real Madrid at the Amsterdam Arena. Ajax are second in the Eredivisie and finished second in their group, behind Bayern Munich. The three time defending champions won their group and are second in La Liga.
Ajax were tremendous over the first half of the Eredivisie season, picking up 47 of a possible 51 points. However, Ajax have struggled following the winter break, picking up only four points in their last four games. The poor start to the second half of the season has Ajax six points behind rivals PSV. Erik ten Hag’s team will look to pull off a major upset against Real Madrid. The Dutch side are large underdogs but do have some talented players that give them a chance, especially if ultra-athletic keeper Andre Onana is on his game over the two legs.
Frenkie de Jong will soon be a household name around the world after Barcelona paid €75 million for him. The 21-year-old crafty midfielder will play a box to box role for Ajax and try to create chances for the front three. Former Real striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will lead the line for Ajax along with Dusan Tadic and Hakim Ziyech. The trio has combined for 51 goals in all competitions this season.
At the back, Matthijs de Ligt and Daley Blind will start at center-back, while Nicolas Tagliafico and Noussair Mazraoui will be the full-backs. Tagliafico was excellent during the group stage. While De Ligt is arguably the best young center-back in the world, combining all of the qualities you would want. De Ligt offers size, speed and the ability to play the ball out at the back. The 19-year-old will likely be sold for more than the €75 million that Ajax received for de Jong when they eventually have to sell him.
Real Madrid have won four of the past five Champions League titles and have reached the semifinals in eight consecutive years. The last time that Real failed to reach the semifinal was the 2009-10 season when they were knocked out in the round of 16. Real Madrid enter the knockout stage this season off of arguably their best performance of the season, beating Atletico 3-1 over the weekend. Santiago Solari’s team have won five straight games to move within six points of Barcelona. Madrid will rely on their experience and talent to reach the quarterfinal for a ninth consecutive season.
With Cristiano Ronaldo now at Juventus, Gareth Bale was expected to pick up the slack. However, injuries have limited the Welsh star’s abilities this season. Healthy again, Bale will start next to Karim Benzema, who leads the club with 18 goals this season. The only question for Solari will be who starts on the other side of Benzema in the front three as Marco Asensio and Vinicius Junior have split time recently. The rest of the lineup will remain the same as it has been over the past few seasons, as every Madrid player is healthy.

Ajax and Real Madrid have played 12 games against each other, with Real winning seven games and one ending in a draw. The two clubs were in the same Champions League group for three straight years between 2010 and 2013, with Real winning all six games. The last time Ajax beat Real was in the 1995-96 group stage when they won both games on way to the final.
