Washington Redskins: 5 offseason needs in 2019
By Jon Dove
3. Quarterback
Washington’s quarterback position is arguably the biggest question mark for the Redskins this offseason. It looks like a near guarantee that Alex Smith won’t be able to play this year. His horrific leg injury was unfortunate for both Smith and the Redskins.
At 34 years old, Smith has more than a few good years left in him if he’s able to make a full recovery. The problem is that it’s up in the air whether or not he’ll be able to make back to 100%. This creates plenty of uncertainty for Washington.
ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. recently released his newest 2019 NFL mock draft which had the Redskins adding a new franchise quarterback. Missouri’s Drew Lock is a strong-armed signal caller who is still a bit raw.
Lock comes from a spread attack and has had bouts of inconsistency. However, if brought in by the Redskins he’d likely get a chance to compete for immediate playing time.
Washington’s only other real option currently on the roster is Colt McCoy who suffered a broken leg of his own late last season. The Redskins have trust in McCoy, but he offers very little upside. Josh Johnson is another candidate as someone who was brought in late last year.
However, neither McCoy or Johnson are the long-term answer in Washington.
