Arsenal face Southampton at the Emirates on Sunday, Feb. 24. Here’s all the info you need to watch.

In many ways Unai Emery’s Arsenal, aren’t that much different than Arsene Wenger’s team of the last few seasons. Yes, bar a few personnel changes in the middle of the park — Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi — and a more aggressive pressing game, mentally Arsenal are still the same. They face a Southampton team that are undoubtedly a physical match for them under Ralph Hassenhuttl, and will put up a fight in London.

The problem for Arsenal in this testing period of the season is a lack of consistency. There seems to be a real case of burnout amongst some of the Arsenal players, and injuries have led to constant rotation of the starting XI. Thursday saw Mesut Ozil start in the Europa league for the first time in what seems like an age. Arsenal cruised through as a result, but Southampton will be a completely different proposition.

Southampton’s three-man defense usually poses an awkward test for a lot of their opponents, and Emery will have to show his flexibility again. Arsenal have lined up with a three themselves on a number of times this season, and doing so will allow them a greater degree of control. The problem for Arsenal this season has been a lack of creativity from the midfield. With Ozil seemingly exiled from the first team, they have had to be reliant on runners from the middle — Aaron Ramsey — or on players like Alex Iwobi and Henrik Mkhitaryan, both struggling for form.

Luckily for Arsenal they are up against a youthful Southampton side stuck in a bad way. After a great start to his career — the pinnacle being beating Arsenal in the reverse fixture — Hassenhuttl’s side see themselves back in the relegation zone with 12 games to go. Granted, they are just a point behind 17th placed Cardiff City and three points of 13th place Crystal Palace, but their performances in recent weeks have dropped off. Conceding goals at the death against both Burnley and Cardiff have seen them drop valuable points, points which they cannot afford to lose. After Arsenal, Southampton face Fulham then Manchester United and Tottenham, crunch ties at a crucial part of the season.

Arsenal themselves have the Champions League to fight for. Both teams have a lot to fight for.
