Kansas has lorded over the Big 12 for the past 14 years, but their streak of regular season conference titles may come to an end tonight when they host Kansas State.

Death, taxes, and Kansas winning the Big 12 regular season title are among the few certainties in life. Kansas has ripped off 14 consecutive Big 12 championships, but number 15 is in serious jeopardy.

Things took a dramatic turn for the Jayhawks in Lubbock on Saturday, when they got run out of the gym by Texas Tech in a 91-62 rout. The Red Raiders were on fire from the jump, hitting 16 3’s and shooting 60.7 percent from the floor to bury Kansas.

The loss dropped Kansas to 9-5 in the Big 12, trailing first place Kansas State by two games with only four left in the regular season. The Wildcats are headed to Allen Fieldhouse tonight with a chance to complete a season sweep of their in-state rivals and make it nearly impossible for Kansas to claim the conference title.

Kansas State has been quietly efficient team all season long, including Saturday’s 85-46 demolition of Oklahoma State. The key to that game, like it has been for the Wildcats all season long, was a smothering defense that held the Cowboys to just 31.4 percent from the floor.

The Wildcats have already taken care of Kansas once this season, beating the Jayhawks 74-67 in Manhattan three weeks ago. Completing a sweep at Allen Fieldhouse won’t be easy, but doing it would all but assure that the Big 12 will have a new champion.
