Ha Ha Clinton-Dix rumors: 5 best fits in NFL free agency
By Nick Villano
2. Dallas Cowboys
If the Redskins decide that Clinton-Dix is too rich for their blood, he could go to a place where they play him twice a year. The Dallas Cowboys are expected to be in the market for a safety, and with $48 million in projected cap space, they’d have plenty of money to cover his $10 million.
The problem is paying Clinton-Dix long term. Demarcus Lawrence is a free agent this season, and if they bring him back that takes a huge chunk of that cap space. Amari Cooper is another free agent the Cowboys want to pay, and if they give him the deal he earned after he was traded that’s another huge chunk from their cap space. Add in the fact they soon need to pay Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott in the years to come, and long-term deals could really hurt.
However, most NFL teams have tunnel vision. They are full speed ahead on winning the next season, and they will figure out the financials at a later date. That’s especially true for Jerry Jones, who sees his team is a playoff contender and will look to make them Super Bowl contenders. Adding a 26-year-old safety entering his prime will certainly help things.
Taking this asset away from a division rival is an added bonus. The Cowboys cornerbacks are playing well, and Clinton-Dix can round out a really nice secondary. With Odell Beckham Jr. and Alshon Jeffrey on division rivals, secondary help is a must to remain contenders. The Cowboys could look to sign this player for those reasons.
