Manchester United’s good form doesn’t seem have an end. Together again, the team looks exactly that — a team, and the talk has finally shifted away from just Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s “feel good effect.” They now take on Southampton who grabbed a vital win in midweek to take them out of the relegation zone.
Manchester United will come into this game full of confidence despite their injuries after dispatching Crystal Palace in midweek. United look like themselves again, going in to each game with an air of confidence and expectation of winning well. They were by no means at their free-flowing best against Palace, but such is their quality that they don’t need to be when coming across such opposition.
Despite the injuries to Jesse Lingard, Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic and Anthony Martial, United can still rely on the likes of Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku to provide the attacking threat. In midfield, Scott McTominay — arguably having his best game at Palace — has deputized well for Matic , and would be expected to continue. Even Fred and Alexis Sanches who seemed bereft of confidence under Jose Mourinho are being given opportunities in the team and will look to further stake their claim for the starting 11.
Southampton for all the good work done by Ralph Hassenhuttl are still only a point above the relegation zone. Yet, it’s unlikely they will roll over at Old Trafford. The spirit and togetherness instilled by Hassenhuttl has translated very well to the squad, and there are some real leaders being developed at Southampton again. James Ward-Prowse has now scored four goals, Pierre Emil Hojbjerg is a real competitor in midfield and the defense is now aided by the three men at the back. You would expect a competitive performance from Southampton, but it’s unlikely they will get anything out of this match.
