2019 NFL Combine: 10 players who bombed
By Joe Romano
Irv Smith, TE, Alabama
Earlier I said that some bad combine performances will have scouts go back and watch more tape. That is what likely will happen with Alabama’s Irv Smith. One of the youngest players in the draft, he projected as a do-it-all tight end who is a good in line blocker and excellent receiver despite being under utilized by the Crimson Tide. The weekend was not kind to Smith though.
It started with the weigh-ins where Smith came in at a shade over 6-foot-2 and 242 pounds. That is not the size of an NFL tight end. In fact Smith’s height ranks in the seventh percentile and his weight in the eighth percentile according to MockDraftable. Given that size, most would expect Smith to dominate the athletic testing. Well think again.
It started okay with a 4.63 40 yard dash, fourth fastest among tight ends. His workout went down hill after that. Smith posted a pedestrian 19 reps on the bench press. It got worse. Smith’s 20 yard shuttle, three cone drill and jumps were all in the “undraftable” range. His 60 yard shuttle was one of the worst by a tight end prospect in combine history.
These numbers will likely push Smith down the board after coming in as a fringe first round prospect. The Alabama pro day will likely be attended by the entire NFL so Smith has a chance to recoup some of his lost stock. This combine was rough for Smith but he could still find success in the NFL, it would just be as an outlier.
