After ripping off their third straight win on Thursday night, Seton Hall will look to move one step closer to the Big East title by topping Marquette for the second time in nine days.

Things looked dire for Seton Hall 13 days ago, when they lost in double-overtime to Georgetown to fall back into the midst of the bubble mess. What happened after that has been awesome if you’re a Pirates’ fan since Seton Hall has basically been resurrected from the dead.

The Pirates finished the regular season with wins over the Big East’s top dogs, Marquette and Villanova, at home and built on that success by getting revenge on Georgetown in their Big East Tournament opener. Myles Powell had a field day for the Pirates, outscoring Georgetown 29-28 in the first half, as Seton Hall rolled to a 73-57 victory.

The Pirates weren’t the only team to have an easy victory on Thursday as Marquette also found its way back into the win column. Naismith semifinalist Markus Howard scored 30 points to help the Golden Eagles blow out St. John’s 86-54 at Madison Square Garden.

The win not only snapped a four-game slide for the Golden Eagles, but it was also important for Marquette to put up a good result against St. John’s. The Red Storm swept a pair of meetings with Marquette during the regular season, and losing a third time to the Johnnies would not have been good for seeding purposes.

Now both Marquette and Seton Hall can feel reasonably good about themselves heading into the NCAA Tournament, but scoring a victory tonight would make things even sweeter. The winner of this game will take on the victor from the Xavier-Villanova matchup in the final tomorrow night.
